The firmware upgrade through UART requires the following steps. Make sure your device has a XMODEM bootloader. Connect your device to the machine that will perform the upgrade through a UART interface. Connect to the device with a serial terminal application that is capable of XMODEM file transfer. (I used tera term). Reboot your device into the bootloader.
You can confirm this if you see the bootloader menu on the serial interface. The bootloader menu looks like this.

Select the 'upload gbl' option by pressing 1. The device will enter a loop and start waiting for XMODEM packets. Transfer the desired firmware upgrade file in gbl format using XMODEM file transfer. After the device confirms that the upload was successful select the 'run' option. The new firmware should be running on the device now try and connect to it with a HOST.
